Lotus Plaza - ‘Come Back’

Apologies if there is anyone who checks this blog on a regular basis in search of new music, as for the last few months I have been spending my time on a communal blog called PIONEARS. This aims to be a playlist of the best of three individual’s picks and tries to act as a sort of music blog for people who don’t read music blogs - hoping to both collate the songs that we love and act as a gateway for songs that are perhaps lesser known and shouldn’t be.
I am however reluctant to leave this blog altogether as sometimes a song does so much to you that writing a one line blurb on it doesn’t quite do it justice. It’s these kind of songs that the true music lover is constantly seeking out, but it’s so rare that a song actually does have this kind of influence on you that when it does you want to spread the word. In fact it’s only really this and a couple of Jamie XX picks that have really ticked all the boxes for me as late. But this one in particular stands out for so many reasons. It’s obvious to point to a certain nostalgia in the song (it’s named ‘Come Back’…) but the song does truly convey this, maybe because it’s so long, or so slow, or so dazed, but it’s dripping with reflections into the past. The guitars certainly have that scuzzy distortion feel to them that you haven’t really heard since the 90’s. And the simple drums and the constant repetition allow you to plod on through at a slow and steady pace.
Anyway, after a fairly recent but dedicated appreciation of the music of Deerhunter I was pleasantly surprised to find that it’s not just Bradford Cox who’s the musical genius in the troupe, there’s also his best friend and guitar sidekick Lockett Pundt (the rumoured mastermind behind ‘Desire Lines’) that serve us up beauties such as this one through his side project Lotus Plaza promising that both Deerhunter and Lotus Plaza have a very bright future ahead of them.
His new album Spooky Action at a Distance is out in April. I’m looking forward to it - you should too.
