S. Carey - Mothers

When I heard that Bon Iver’s Sean Carey had released a solo album, I was straight on the case, as after 2008’s For Emma, Forever Ago I’m hot on the tail of any kind of nu-folk/americana of the same vein. The debut - All We Grow - from S. Carey himselfnot groundbreaking, all in all its a decent album, but it leaves you lacking that little bit more. Great parts to songs turn out to be just that, great parts, almost always leaving you unfulfilled at the end of the song - ‘Mothers’ being a classic example, with the opening phrases preparing you for something that never materialises. It’s not a bad song, but you can’t help feel that it could have been better. Saying that, he’s got a great sound, and more importantly, his own sound - it’s not just a Bon Iver cover album, and it’s really great to see him doing his own thing.
Sounds A Little Like: something in between Bon Iver and Volcano Choir, either way, strong Justin Vernon influences.

Chaque Chanson.
