The Antlers - Rolled Together Feat. Neon Indian
I’ve been thinking too much recently about how I should have given Hospice, The Antlers’ 2009 album, much more of a listen when it came out, because what a masterpiece it truly is. The best albums come from pain and suffering and despite what Katy Perry or Lady Gaga might tell you, not just from the simple pleasures in life. There’s something about heartbreak, or loss, or depression, that brings out something truly spectacular in a musician. And on Hospice, the New York indie-alt band’s third album, that something special is there - it’s so beautiful that it’s haunting. Thus, through regret, I am determined not to miss out on this year’s Burst Apart (which came out yesterday), and is already shaping up to be one of 2011’s greatest. It’s a happier album, slightly more upbeat - but the raw emotion is still there, as you can hear from their recent collaboration with Neon Indian: the screaming, the groaning, the noise and the soft guitar melodies that bring it all together in this eight-minute masterpiece.
